7 Golf Impact Drills That Will Square Your Clubface

One of the hardest things to do in sports is to hit a golf ball straight. In order to hit the ball straight a golfer must bring the clubface back to the exact same position it started. Too open or too closed at impact causes spin on the ball and results in the dreaded “slice” or “hook”. Too many sliced drives or irons and the chance at 79 goes out the window. We have to square that clubface time and time again yet how many of us actually work on impact drills to perfect it?

Impact position is the key for me to play better golf and I am tracking my clubface angle of every swing I take. When I am doing the impact drills below the first thing I will look at is my face angle and try to make slight adjustments to my swing.

 

Below are some of my favorite golf impact drills:

Impact Drills

Drill #1 – 2 Tee

This drill is designed to help work on making great contact with the golf ball every time. Hank Haney talks about how hitting the ball in the center of the clubface is key to straight and long shots. Many golfers lose a ton of power and control by hitting the ball on the toe or heel of the club. This drill takes great focus and tons of practice but will in the long run will pay off with better shot making.

To do this drill, take your setup position. Now where the clubface sits on the ground, place one tee by the toe and one tee by the heel. Now, place the ball between the two tees and hit some shots. If you hit the inside tee you most likely hit it off the toe and if you hit the outside tee most likely the heel. This drill takes practice. I found myself destroying the tees (as you can see in the diagram below) before I really started to hit the ball flush in the center of my club.

Drill #2 – 3 Ball

The 3 ball drill is a favorite of top instructors Bill and Craig Harmon. This drill works to help get the club moving through the impact position of the shot. It is a progressive drill and will give the feeling of the proper impact position.

To do this drill place three balls on the ground in a line. One ball is at the impact position and the other two are past the impact zone. You than take practice swings with the club first bottoming out at the first ball, then second and then last. This will get the club hitting the right spot as you move through impact.

 Drill #3 – 9 to 3 Drill

Sean Foley uses this drill with all his students to teach them the proper impact position because no two swings are identical. This impact drill focuses on the small picture of going from hip to hip with the swing. By using a clock terminology of 9 o’clock to 3 o’clock with this drill, you will gain less manipulation in your swing and become more consistent.

To do this drill, first imagine the clock with 9 o’clock on your backswing and 3 o’clock on your follow through. Now get in your stance with 60% of your weight on your left foot (for right-handed golfers). Take your swing back 3/4th to the 9 o’clock position, shifting your weight and then swing through to 3 o’clock. You should get taller and hit the ball about 75% less distance. Foley suggests doing this drill for 30 minutes a day to improve your impact position.

Drill #4 –  2 x 4 Impact Drill

Peter Kostis has a drill he uses with his students to get them to feel the forward lean of the body and clubhead at impact. I call this impact drill the 2 x 4 drill as you will need a block of wood or something solid. You will really be able to feel the shaft lean and the forward press that is needed to compress the ball at impact.

To do this drill, put the 2 x 4 on the ground in front of your clubface at address. Now press your clubface against the board almost moving the board forward. This pre-impact position is an important feeling to have to be consistent with your swing. Once you have the feeling, move over to a real ball and hit it. You should see great improvement in your contact.

Drill #5 – Right Arm Only 

Hitting the ball with one arm only in practice is a great way to train the proper angle at impact. A narrow angle will make your impact position suffer and your ball flight will be off. This drill will get you into a proper angle on the backswing and work on a great impact position.

To do this drill, simply take your lead arm off the club and take swings with just your right arm. Get the club to almost 90% and think “chest back and chest down”, making sure to extend the arm on the follow through. Make sure to turn your shoulder on the backswing. This drill will really get your angle on impact correct and help you make better contact.

Drill #6 – Split Grip Drill 

Joe Hallet calls this drill “Breaking up is hard to do” because you are breaking your hands apart to do it properly. This is a great drill to work on the proper hand motion at impact. Your hands need to be solid at impact to become a consistent ball striker. If this drill is done incorrectly you will have an awkward feeling in your swing and may even miss the ball. By doing this drill everyday, you will soon learn how to use your hands through impact.

To do this drill, you will need to break your hands apart about 2-3 inches on the golf club. Now just take your normal swing. This drill will force you to put the club in the proper place at impact.

Drill #7 – No Backswing Push

Teaching pro Mike Mcgetrick uses this drill to help golfers get the feeling of a good impact position. It is a very simple at home drill that you can practice. This drill focuses on the point of impact and how to finish with the club lower than the hands.

To do this drill, get out a lofted club like a wedge or 9 iron and get into the impact position with the club touching the ball. Now, with your hands ahead of the clubface, push the ball into the air without taking a backswing. It is tough drill that will surely get you hitting better shots.
